These last three weeks have been something else. Since the night it was announced Michael Brown’s killer would walk free without indictment, Portland has seen mass protests along with virtually every other major city in the nation. Seemingly every other day there’s been another action here in Portland. What started out as a mix of veteran activists and new-coming young people has quickly developed into a sophisticated grassroots machine demanding justice.
Just days after a victorious street skirmish that saw about 1,000 Portlanders repeatedly out-manuver the Portland Police Bureau, a second march was coordinated to begin from the downtown ‘Justice’ Center. Word got out that a featured guest speaker who happened to be in town would join the rally. Indeed, despite some online quarreling about this individual, Jesse Jackson’s appearance and speech that night fired up a frigid crowd. While Mr. Jackson didn’t personally join the following march, his words inspired the masses of young people as they set off into the chilly night.
